  1. I have lived in Kazakhstan for 20 years, as an Englishman, and I think on the whole you are right and offer a nice balance of positive and other. If I were to say a few words, Internet freedom here is not as you said, I know of no limits and I am reading your website from Almaty without any VPN, and levels of personal freedom are higher here than in the UK on pretty much all levels. Islamic dress has become very common recently. By and large, thank you for your efforts.

    1. Hey! Thanks for your comment (just now seeing it and not sure why!). I am glad the internet freedom is back – I haven’t been back since 2019 but the big issues were in 2018. I know the govt has changed since! I am hoping to go back next year for a bit and give some of my guides a proper update. I miss KZ so much :)

  2. 6 of us are going trekking starting from Karakol in July, Plse advise which is a better & more convenient airport to arrive, Bishkek or Almaty ? and how is the ease of connectivity to Karakol by bus. Thanks

    1. Bishkek! It is easy to get to Karakol but takes quite some time! Cholpon-ata is on the way and a popular place to go so can also take marshrutka there and get over to Karakol via that route.

  3. Yandex taxi scam alert! I literally take hundreds of Yandex taxis in various countries each year, and never had any issues with them anywhere. However this one (in early Oct 2022) is one to be aware of.

What happened? I was leaving my hotel in downtown Almaty and pulled out my phone to get a Yandex to the airport. So I started typing “Almaty International Airport” in the “Where to” box.

Sure enough, a list of several entries with this name popped up (in hindsight I should have wondered why there were more than one). I picked one of the listed entries (one that said “Almaty International Airport ala” – as the included airport code somehow instilled more confidence than the entry without it), waited for the car and jumped in the back seat.

Now I’m relatively unfamiliar with Almaty, but because I never had any issues with Yandex in many years, I was just playing with my phone during the ride, and didn’t notice that the car went the opposite way from the airport.

At some point after 15 minutes or so, the driver pulled into a small random side street, hopped out of the car saying we had arrived, and put my suitcase on the sidewalk.

I was very surprised, asked about the airport, but the driver kind of smirked and waited. So I asked him if he could drive me to the airport and negotiated a cash fee (as the app also said I had arrived, but no longer mentioned the airport, just the whatever side street we were in).

Conveniently, the street we had arrived in was at the opposite side of town. So it was 30 minutes drive or so to the airport, where I was duly delivered eventually. But it was annoying, and I was wondering what had happened – as I did select the Airport as the destination – or so I thought.

All I can think of is that there is a way that people (presumably drivers only, but not sure) can “map” the name of a destination to a random address. So someone created a fake “Almaty International Airport ala” destination to show up in the app (this was also the reason why there are more than one in the list, presumably), and mapped the random house address in a street on the other side of town to it.

So lesson learned: pay attention not only to the name of the destination, but also that it actually leads to the actual destination on the map (comparing with Google or Yandex maps).

In this case, it ended without major issues. But it doesn’t take much imagination for worse things that can happen if criminals start playing with this “feature”.

I’ve reported it to Yandex in KZ and hopefully they will update the app, to stop this kind of issue from happening. But meanwhile, make sure to always compare the actual destination location, if choosing a destination by name in the app. and not entering the actual address.

And in any case, track your ride while in the car, making sure it is actually going in the correct direction. Don’t just play with your phone and don’t look outside, like I did… I otherwise had a great time in Almaty, so can’t complain. Just a minor but annoying potential issue to be aware of.
