Where to Get Hot Chocolate in Rovaniemi, Finland (& SCV)
If there is one thing I love during the winter months, it is a delicious cup of hot chocolate. In this guide, I will share five of my favorite places to grab a hot chocolate in Rovaniemi, Finland.
Quick Rovaniemi Travel Guide
If you’re traveling to Rovaniemi last minute, be sure you have hotels and tours booked ahead of time. Below are some of my top picks:
❄️ Best tours and activities from Rovaniemi:
- Northern lights tour in Rovaniemi (locally-owned with guaranteed sightings!)
- Husky sledding at Apukka (most popular dog-sledding adventure)
- Arctic Snowhotel visit from Rovaniemi (includes transportation!)
🛌 Top hotels and lodging in Rovaniemi:
- Apukka Resort (my favorite glass igloo accommodation around Rovaniemi)
- Ibedcity (an affordable capsule hostel about 1km from SCV)
- Arctic TreeHouse Hotel (famous hotel in a gorgeous forest)
🍲 My favorite places to eat in Rovaniemi: Gustav, Santa’s Salmon Place, Sky Kitchen & View, Taiga, Cafe & Bar 21, Restaurant Gallis

While I am a coffee drinker (you can check out this guide to my favorite cafes in Rovaniemi), I like to switch it up a bit during the colder months. Since I no longer drink alcohol, I find myself gravitating toward cocoa topped with as many marshmallows as the cup will allow!
Before I get into this guide, I will state that Finnish hot chocolate is similar to the kind you’ll find in the Nordics, USA/Canada, Germany, and other Nordic countries. This is not the soupy stuff you eat with a spoon like in the south of Europe (which is delicious in its own right). So if you’re Spanish or Italian and are reading this, please know that before ordering, to avoid disappointment.

Let me know if any places deserve to be in this guide that I left out. I will make it a point to get there ASAP and check them out. Thanks!
Good to Know
Rovaniemi is very vegan-friendly! Just ask for a plant-based milk alternative when ordering and they should be able to provide you with one. There might be a slight upcharge. Oat milk tends to be the most common milk-alternative.
Where to Get Hot Chocolate in Rovaniemi
1. Loft Cafe
This small cafe is located at Santa Claus Village on the second floor of the main tourist. information building. You can see signs from the inside, but it is probably easier to go from the outside upstairs directly into the cafe.
Loft Cafe has a variety of options like homemade pastries, coffee, and tea… but their hot chocolate is what I go for. They have a gingerbread hot chocolate that is one of my favorites here in Rovaniemi. They also serve it with a mini candy cane, which is kind of fun.

One thing you should know is that this place gets packed. It is really hard to find a seat and it is a nightmare for my claustrophobia. But you can take your drink away and enjoy it outside if the space stresses you out.
A gingerbread hot chocolate at Loft Cafe is €6.90.
2. Cafe & Bar 21
The most popular spot in the city for a hot chocolate is Cafe & Bar 21 at Rovakatu 21. And while I love this place so much, it can be so difficult to get in as everyone goes there… locals and tourists both!
They have three types of hot chocolate you can try: the Rovaniemi, the Marshmallows, and the Ginger Bread. The Rovaniemi is served in a Rovaniemi mug and has milk, cream, sugar, dark chocolate, and whipped cream. The Marshmallows one offers all of the above, including marshmallows (and served in a Christmas tree mug). And the Ginger Bread one contains milk, cream, sugar, dark chocolate, and gingerbread pieces. It is served in a gingerbread boy mug.
You can enjoy a hot chocolate at Cafe & Bar 21 for €6.50 (Rovaniemi) or €6.90 (Marshmallows and Ginger Bread options).
3. Coffee House
Located in the Rovaniemi city center at Lordi Square is the Finnish coffee chain, Coffee House. While I tend to frequent the place for its coffee, it is also nice to grab a hot chocolate there every now and again!

It is a spacious cafe with a decent amount of seating and tasty pastries that you can enjoy alongside a cup of cocoa. Their hot chocolate comes topped with marshmallows and cream. You can get a cup for €5.50.
4. Köök by Gallis
This is a newer spot at Santa Claus Village and it is in its first season! I hope they are going to be around next year too. Köök is a food truck located at SCV that is operated by my favorite restaurant in Rovaniemi, Gallis (owned by the Glass Resort).

Köök by Gallis offers porridge (both sweet and savory), King crab soup, a few other drinks, and a cup of delectable hot chocolate. You can enjoy it by their little fire or you can drink it as you explore Santa Claus Village. A cup of hot chocolate at Köök is €6.
5. Espresso House
Espresso House is a Swedish chain located at Lordi Square in the heart of Rovaniemi’s city center.
This is my go-to spot for working in the city (I don’t feel bad using their tables for a long duration of the day since most students do the same) but I don’t usually order hot chocolate there. I did the other day and it was pretty tasty, so I thought I’d throw it on this guide!

Their hot chocolate comes topped with marshmallows and cream. There are two sizes: a small and a standard. The small hot chocolate is €4.90 and the standard is €5.90.
