Delicious Cafes in Bergen, Norway

1. Det Lille Kaffekompaniet

Det Lille Kaffekompaniet is Bergen’s smallest and oldest coffee shop. There’s both indoor and outdoor seating here and it’s tucked away down a narrow street.

The highlight of this coffee shop is the sweet treats, as there are various cakes and pastries on offer. Carrot cake is one of the most popular options (I think Norwegian carrot cake is better than in other places), but the cinnamon rolls, cheesecakes, and cookies are all favorites too.

This Bergen coffee shop also offers vegan sandwiches, so there’s something for everyone, and you can choose from a variety of hot drinks. These include cappuccinos, teas, chai lattes, and hot chocolate. You can also purchase packaged tea and coffee here.

Just keep in mind that there’s limited internal seating if it rains.

2. Godt Brød

Godt Brød is a popular chain bakery throughout Norway. The company is known for its healthy lunches and freshly baked goods, but it also offers some of the best coffee in Bergen (and the most affordable).

The reason I am including them here is that they are open 7 days a week and they offer a free refill on their filtered coffee, making it the perfect place for someone on a budget.

Godt Brød Fløyen

The Godt Brød cafes are known for their tasty treats, including cinnamon rolls, summer bowls, school bowls, and scones. There’s also a variety of baguettes, sandwiches, and pastries to choose from, and only the highest-quality organic ingredients are used.

You can pair your meal with a squeezed fruit juice, hot drink, or water.

Godt Brød Fløyen is one of the most popular branches in the city. However, if you head to specific branches in Bergen (Godt Brød Kronstad or Godt Brød Fløttmannsplassen), you can also grab an artisanal pizza from Tuesday to Friday.

3. Kaf Kafe Bryggen

Kaf Kafe Bryggen is located within a 300-year-old wooden building, in the historic site of Bryggen, so it offers a very authentic vibe. And in a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

This charming coffee shop is the perfect place to relax with a coffee and start your day. As well as other hot drinks, such as hot chocolate and chai latte, Kaf Kafe Bryggen also serves a variety of iced drinks, smoothies, and milkshakes, so there’s something for everyone! You can even pick up something alcoholic inside if you’re looking to do a little day drinking.

The Norwegian waffles here are a big hit, with the brown cheese having a very unique taste. You can also opt for something sweeter, such as powdered sugar or Nutella.

Kaffemisjonen is another of the best cafes in Bergen, Norway. This locally-owned cafe is one of the top coffee options in the city, with sources including both Norwegian and international coffee roasters.

The baristas here are very experienced and know how to create a finely crafted brew, which is what sets Kaffemisjonen apart from other cafes.

7. Fjåk Chocolate Shop & Café

If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on Fjåk Chocolate Shop & Café. As Norway’s first bean-to-bar chocolate maker, this cafe is a must-visit (and has amazing coffee, too).

The hot chocolates here are the star of the show, and you can choose the style, type of milk, and cocoa. I’d also recommend having the marshmallow! There are various chocolate combinations to choose from too, so there’s something for everyone. My personal favorite is the chili hot chocolate!

Better yet, you can enjoy a delicious cookie (the caramel chocolate cookie is very popular) or a brownie alongside your hot chocolate.

This place also sells a range of Fjåk Chocolate, so you can take some with you for the rest of your trip. Although I guess that you’ll be coming back here again anyway!

8. Vågal

When listing the best cafes in Bergen, I couldn’t leave Vågal off the list! This quirky cafe offers multiple seating areas (indoor and outdoor), as well as charming decor, with hanging plants, rustic walls, funky lighting, and murals.

With a laid-back atmosphere, board games, and great music, it’s a fantastic option if you’re looking to relax and take it easy.

At Vågal, you can enjoy delicious pastries, sandwiches, soups, and cakes, along with a variety of hot and cold drinks. There’s also beer on tap or wine if you’re looking for something stronger, and prices are affordable.
