  1. Makanda Illinois in the Southwest of the state is an amazing little artists community with a great biannual festival and awesome shops that are open year round! The ice cream shop is my favorite. There they serve a double come with the scoops side by side, made possible with a special cone that splits partway up. I loved this place growing up and now my daughter does too. She even moved back to the area from Tucson, AZ for college at SIU.(just a few short miles north in Carbondale)

  2. Also Utica home of Burgoo in October. Cute town almost destroyed by a tornado. Burgoo is the name of a French stew that has everything in it. Starved Rock State Park is also worth the visit & right outside of the small town. Another park is Buffalo Rock. They are close to Ottawa, Princeton, La Salle, Peru & Ogelsby. The Illinois River runs through the park & many of the small towns in the area. If you want to have bar fun head down to Water Street in Peru. There are plenty of places to explore in the downtown areas of these towns.

  3. You left out Lewistown, IL. Has many historical locations, including Edgar Lee Master’s “Spoon River Anthology”.
