  1. I have for some reason ended up on this site at 04:45 in the night and i have no idea why, but i felt the need comment on 1 thing you wrote here, which is the drinking age. You’re not allowed to purchase alcohol of any form, until you’re 18. But you’re allowed to drink alcohol in itself from the moment you’re born. Meaning : if you randomly find a bottle of vodka or a 6-pack of beer, you’re allowed to drink it. Meaning we actually start drinking at an early age, most around 15-16, by getting other people to buy for you (cousins, elder siblings and so on)

  2. Americans will always be welcome in Norway. There is more descendent’s form Norwegians living in the US than there is Norwegians. The “quarter pounder” is named that in US, England and Norway… We do not use pounds but we kept the name:-) rest of Europe it is named a “Royal with cheese”. Remember also that Norwegians are not the same all over the country. You can divide them in five; shout (up to Oslo) east, vest, middle and North. The reason Norwegians do not talk to strangers is that we do not want to meddle with there affairs. Norwegians think some time that is rude. I do not think that we are rude it is rather Americans ho are too polite in there speaking. We you ask me; How are you? How often do you really care? If I then is honest and say I feel like shit, because….. Then you think I`m rude, way the h**l did you ask then?

Hope you continue to like it here in Norway and remember that Norwegians have always looked up to the Americans ;-) And we see on you as one of our closed friends.

    1. HI Stian!

Thanks so much for your comment on my blog post :) It is always cool to get a comment from a Norwegian on a post like this because I’m equally as curious of how people perceive Americans when they move to the US ;)

It’s so interesting to read this post over because I was such a newbie to Norway! While most of the things have stayed the same, it’s crazy to think I’ve now been here for about three years! I live in Oslo now and have tons of friends here, but Norwegian and not Norwegian, and I’m loving it :) Things are great! Most people are very nice, although slightly reserved and quiet at first…no different than the first impression I received upon moving here. I’m very lucky to call this place my adopted home. :)

Hope you have a great day!

  3. I’m quite shure you are right. And it makes me embarrased. People are not-outgoing and sometimes rude. Not because they want to, just because we didn’t learn how to behave properly. My guess is that it’s because we were never many people in this country, and like it was mentioned further up, we’re simple not used to strangers as a homogenous society. But I hope we’re learning. From people like you and from traveling ourselves. I was in NY recently and people where so Nice.

And finally:please don’t adapt to this unconsious shy-culture, this zombie nation. Be yourself, try to be a good example and hopefully you can contribute to raise this country. Meanwhile I hope you enjoy :)

Kind regards from a blond Norwegian fashionista, trying to be open-minded and polite :)

    1. hi tom!!! thanks for your message :) it’s so funny to reread this post as it has had a couple of comments the last few days because ive now been in norway for THREE years! to see my reactions at things at two months is kind of crazy and strange! i dont think my opinion has changed much…although i did move from bergen to oslo and i think the people are extremely different between the two areas. i actually think the older folks of oslo are a lot more outgoing and talkative than they were in bergen (particularly when im totin around my dog!). i think the tobacco usage now is starting to lessen…even though i do still see a lot of snus, but im seeing less cigs than i did three years ago. and the girls are still beautiful haha :)

thanks for your comment! i always get excited when norwegians comment on my posts that pertain to norway (unless it is moving here or something not relevant and they leave nasty remarks!) :):) hope you are staying warm and enjoying the winter!

  4. Just googling som random stuff and found your blog/site.

Loved reading this! If you think norwegians are crazy drunks, you should se them on a beach vacation to greece, spain etc. Even worse!Because they’re nobody knows us.

But the excuse for us young norwegians is that the alcohol is sooo expensive in the clubs, so we have to drink all we can at pre-parties, and then we hit the town, already mad drunk.
    Hehehe :-)

From a norwegian blonde 22 year old girl (not fake blond. Hehehe)

    1. ive heard that if i want to see some drunks…just book a syden trip ahhahah!!! i totally understand the reasoning and if i grew up here, id probably be exactly the same (although i am adapting slowly as ive been living here for three years now LOL).

thanks for your comment <3 hope winter is treating you well!!!!
