Fischersund in Reykjavík: An Olfactive Journey Through Iceland

Two years ago, I was heading to the US with Icelandair to visit my family. I did my usual three-day stop in Reykjavík and when I got back onto the plane, every other advertisement on the screens was for Fischersund, a family-run perfumery in Reykjavík.

If you know me, you know I love scent. Perfumes, candles, incense… all of it. I have a perfume collection and spend a lot of my time doing deep dives on different noses in the industry and I always think about the olfactory side of travel.

As soon as I saw that advertisement, I created myself a reminder to book a fragrance tour of Fischersund in Reykjavík when I stopped through on my way back from visiting my family. And even though my first visit there was two years ago, I have been back since and will likely stop in every time I am in Reykjavík to see what they have been up to.

About Fischersund in Reykjavík

Fischersund is a family-run perfumery in Reykjavík, Iceland and even though it is renowned for its fragrances, it will immerse you in an entire olfactory journey when you visit. I have visited perfumeries all over the world and this one is truly unique.

When you step inside their flagship store at Fischersund 3, you’ll quickly notice an aesthetic that has been curated to make sure you’re sensing their story through more than just your nose. Sound plays a huge part in the journey, actually, as one of the family members and owners is Jónsi from the famous band Sigur Rós.

The perfumes and fragranced candles, incense, and other home items are all inspired by the nature of Iceland, using oils and herbs sustainably harvested from Icelandic soil.

I’m going to be honest, these scents are so idiosyncratic to other perfumeries, and I reckon the three that I brought home with me (Fischersund No. 23, Jöklalykt collab with 66° North, and Eldblóm) are the most eclectic of all of the perfumes I own. I also brought home some of their incense, which I only use on special occasions.

While you can visit and test perfumes and ask questions, they offer a ‘scented tour’ where you can learn the stories of the fragrances and brand, see their full scent exhibition, and enjoy their signature Icelandic Schnapps. More about that below!

How to Take a Fragrance Tour at Fischersund

As mentioned above, the best way to learn about Fischersund as a brand and through their scent story is to take a tour. These scent tours happen daily from 12pm until 4pm at their flagship store at Fischersund 3 in Reykjavík. You can schedule your tour beforehand on their website here.

The tour lasts for about 30 minutes, but I think mine went a little longer than that. They also give you a shot of the aforementioned Schnapps as well as a small gift to take home. The cost is 3,999 ISK (about $32 per person), and there may be others who join.

I was solo on mine, but the brand has gained a lot more recognition since I took the tour in winter, and I know more and more travelers are visiting (I have been in the shop since and there were always people around!).

There are no refunds available if you miss or need to cancel your tour. And if you’re unable to visit Fischersund in Reykjavík directly, you can actually now order their fragrances, candles, and home goods online via their website.

I rarely recommend visiting perfume stores to people who don’t love fragrance, but this is one of those places that I feel encapsulates Iceland’s creativity and nature in a way that everyone can appreciate.
