  1. Hi Megan, can you recommend a local guide in Porvenir? We plan on spending the night in Porvenir and then want to leave the next morning for the King penguin preserve, returning in time to catch the 2 PM return ferry to Punta Arenas. Thank you, Steve.

    1. Hi Steve!

Sadly, I don’t know of a single person there at all :( We just made a quick stop there (on the tour) and had lunch and left! Our guide for the tour showed us around a little but we had no interaction with locals, unfortunately. It was such a unique place!

The town is very small so it is definitely walkable but it would be cool to get that insider info with a guide. I hope you can find something! Enjoy your trip :)

  2. I’m estimating time to visit on my own via rental car. What time did the ferry leave Punta Arenas, and what time was your Penguin reservation for? I kinda see a 9:00 or 9:30 ferry, with a little time in Porvenir and driving time, so maybe a 3:00 or 4:00 Penguin visit would be best?

    1. Since I did this with the tour, I don’t remember time specifics (we shifted stuff because of a few things so it wasn’t worth remembering for later because it wasn’t on schedule). But, I think we took that 9am ferry. Or something around that. It was a very early day but we took that ferry then got to Porvenir for an early lunch. We walked around 30 minutes upon arriving, then we ate, and then another hour of sightseeing. So, I think this 9am ferry makes sense and must have been what we took.

In between Porvenir and the penguins is wild scenery, but more like flat wind-swept landscapes – kind of cool if you like that (I do). And there are flamingoes. I would think the 3 or 4pm would be fine but it could create an issue getting back to Punta Arenas if the ferry back is delayed (we did a circle and did not go the same way back). Hope this makes sense!

You only really need an hour or two at the penguins! They are pretty far away and unless you’re a photographer w/ a zoom lens, it may not be exciting for too long. It is jut really cool if you don’t have Antarctica planned to see this colony! :)
