  1. Hello! I am from Bratislava and I’ve just returned from a one day trip to Gyor. I was curious about the impressions of other visitors and I found this blog. I agree that Gyor is quite cute and charming. I have actually visited it a few times before but mostly only to do some shopping, so I finally wanted to enjoy it as a tourist. I don’t know either why cities apart from the capitals in CEE don’t get much tourist attention (Krakow might be the only exception). In any case, I can tell you a secret. Many cities in Hungary are this beautiful and charming. Eger and Sopron were mentioned here but try to google pictures of other Hungarian cities/towns too. For example: Esztergom (also about one hour away from Bratislava!), Szentendre, Veszprem, Siofok, Tihany, Pecs, Szeged…

Also, I have learnt too late that the biggest tourist attraction of Gyor is a bit outside of Gyor – the Pannonhalma monastery. It is part of UNESCO heritage. One more reason to return. :) I am fascinated how much beauty is to be found just across the border. Slovak people, including me, are drawn to places which are world famous and far away but it is good to remind ourselves that it is worth to get to know better our neighbours and actually ourselves too.

  2. Hi megan it’s an amazing article and interesting one
There’s a lot of hidden gems in Hungary outside budapest and one of them is SOPRON in the west near Vienna, it’s a small town but with beautiful old buildings and a panoramic view from the fire tower…
You should visit sopron when you’re in hungary and you’ll like it more than győr

    1. So good to know! I haven’t been there yet, but I have had a few Sopron beers if that makes up for it :) Added to the list!

  3. Megan, thank you for this article. I read it quite a while ago, but only in the end of May we managed to pop in Hungary from the UK. And of course when we had a chance we went out to other parts of Hungary and the first place to visit was Gyor (following your interesting and inspiring article, that is). We could only spend two or three hours, but it was worth it. We enjoyed the place without many tourists, at least obvious ones (to be honest, I do not think we spotted any). This was like seeing the lives of real Hungarians. We had nice street counter food. Afferwards we jumped over the border to Velky Meder in Slovakia before heading back to Budapest (we had a hire car). Thank you very much. Would be great to go back there at some point. All the best in your travels!

    1. Hi Kostya! I am gutted that I am just now seeing this comment and replying to it! I don’t know how it fell hidden amongst other ones (I will need to check the post and see if the emails are turned off for me for it). I am so glad you went to Gyor! It really is such a fascinating place and offers perspective into a diff lifestyle than one would find in Budapest. I think visiting cities like Gyor is just as important as visiting the capitals. I had no idea they had a street food scene there :P I am def keen to go back now! Thanks for sharing your experience there! I went to a Hungarian festival this past weekend here in Frankfurt and now have Hungary on the mind! :) Happy travels!
