  1. Hi Megan, I was so happy to read your enthusiastic review of Gyor which is my native city and I also love it. I keep urging my friends here in Oxford to go there and discover it because its charm is just unparalleled. Isn’t it lovely that there are no cars in the city centre and it is full of lovely baroque churches which I am missing here in England and even more the secular baroque architecture. I am sorry you do not like museums because the museums in Gyor are wonderful especially the art places. I visit them every time I go home. I would be so happy to take you round some of them and I am confident I would make you get a bit more interested in them. But if you just walk the streets it is in itself an artistic experience.
I have forwarded you blog to the Deputy Mayor who was my classmate (we are quite old…) and urged him to do something to promote the city. I do not know if he managed to do anything but I am so happy that you found the city lovely and it deserves some nice words.

    Best wishes,
    Veronika

  2. From Vienna, I took a day trip to Gyor and twice to Sopron, all in winter. I highly recommend both, and I’m returning to both this coming May.

  3. I am from Gyor; the old center city is very quaint and interesting to walk through. You can see the Danube and two other rivers that flow through it. The original settlement was started because of the rivers.

  4. Hi Megan, I am Slovak and live in Bratislava. I am sorry that the girls in hostel did not know to recommend you the interesting places in Slovakia and also described Gyor as “grey” city. Next time try to contact some groups in facebook or find free city tours, People are really nice and will advise you many good tips for trips. :-)
