  1. Hi Megan, I am in Khiva as I write….I found your website a day or so before I arrived here and by coincidence am staying at the Polov Qori. It is pretty nice, really appreciate staying outside the Itchan Kala yet with close proximity. You didn’t mention but it is worth a visit is the Nurullaboy Saroyan just a few minutes walk outside the north gate. It is beautiful, interesting and a great quiet break from the chaotic pace in the main area of the Itchan Kala.
I had shivit osh at Arxi – not having had it before I had nothing to compare it to but thought it was good. I also had their eggplant, tomato salad which was doused in an overly sweet dressing. I have eaten this salad in various places in Uz over the past 2 weeks and this was The Most disappointing. Tonight I went to the Sultan – solo middle aged female traveller was given possibly the worst table on the terrace! I went early to avoid crowds etc and still that’s what I got. The young waitress couldn’t have been any less interested in me than she was! Maybe it was a language thing but I’m sure I wasn’t the only English speaking person who has been there! The pumpkin soup was delicious, the skewer was ok. I enjoyed being in the Itchan Kala first thing before the crowds descended, watching the vendors setting up, bantering with each other. But time to move on!

    1. Hi Jan! Thanks so much for the recap! It is always so interesting to see how someone else enjoys Khiva (because I kind of struggled in the city more than others in Uzbekistan, tbh). I actually did go over to Nurullaboy Saroyan when there! I just didn’t spend enough time there to list it anywhere (I was waiting on a friend to fly in from Urgench and her flight kept getting delayed so it was a weird day haha). Yea Arxi was def one of my fave restaurants in Khiva but not a single place I ate in Khiva was better than other cities around UZ. I hope whenever I return things will feel differently but it seems like we had a somewhat similar experience when it comes to food there :D Service was pretty bad everywhere! Hope you have an amazing rest of your trip to Uzbekistan!
